SEO - On Page Optimization Techniques for Promoting Websites

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has become really important in the recent times. With more and more websites being launched, the search engines are progressively getting cramped up. So, if you want your website get a rank in SERP and on the first pages of search engines then SEO is must. On page optimization is a part of Seo.

A couple of the main aspects need special mention. These are the title and the body text or the content. There are some important On-page Optimization techniques which I have mention below.

1. Title Optimization
2. Meta Tags Optimization
3. Image Optimization
4. Content Optimization
5. Link Optimization
6. Important HTML Tags

Title Optimization:
A site’s title tag is by far the most important on-page optimization element because it is the heading of your website. A title tag should be short but descriptive enough for your visitors to identify you and your business. Title tag is the first thing that is shown & indexed by the search engines. If your site has multiple pages, it is wise to give titles to each of them. These create the first impression on the readers. It should ideally be within 10-12 words. So naturally it is given a very high importance.

Meta Tag Optimization:
A site’s Meta tags may not be as important as it used to be before, however I feel that Meta Description is something you can’t just ignore. A site’s Meta description should contain a brief description of your website focusing on the areas and services that your business is specialized in.

The description-tag is probably the most important META-Tag. It is displayed in the SERPs and you should select it as carefully as the title-tag.

Important aspects of the description-tag:

1. For better SEO give every page of your website its own description

2. The description -tag is one of the few meta-tags that still positively influences your website’s ranking, so will be good to use your most important keywords in it.

3. It should contain not more than around 25-30 words.

If you use the NOODP-Tag you are basically telling the search engines that they must not use the DMOZ entry, but the tags that are currently on your website.

The robots-tag is used to tell the search engines what they shall do with your website. Index/noindex tells the search engine whether to index the page or not noindex/nofollow tells them to follow the links or not.

Image Optimization:
If your site has lot of images, you need to optimize them too because they can’t be read by the search engines. It is very easy for a human to understand the image but interpreting process for a search engine is completely different and it is not easy. You need to use some special tags for your images to give them some perfect meaning which can describe it and can be your webpage keyword.

Some Reminding points for Image Optimization:

1. ALT text or Alternate Text is the text to describe your image when your mouse moves over an image on your web page. The text should be meaningful but short. You can use your relevant keywords as ALT text.

2. For SEO always use names like “nokia mobile.jpg” instead of meaningless “DSC24045.jpg”.

3. Whenever you want to link to your image, use the image keywords in your link text. Example: use “view an nokia Phone”, instead of “Click here to view” as the anchor text.

Content Optimization:
A keyword is a word or phrase that you associate with your page so that when it is searched for by a potential customer your site comes up in the SERP.

Your site’s content needs to be optimized in such a way that it can suit both search engines & your readers. Stuffing your site with too many keywords can make your site unreadable. So you will need to have some sort of balance between your keywords & your content.

Keywords are very important for On page optimization and consequently better search engine ranking and should be chosen carefully.

For example, if your site sells mobile phone you want your site to be listed in the SERP when someone types in “mobile phone” in a search engine

You should use keywords in content of the page but shouldn’t use much because it can be spamming and by this some search engines will penalize your page if you over saturate your content with keywords but there is another way for it you can use keywords synonyms.

Important elements of Keyword Optimization

1. For On page Optimization first do a proper research before you decide on your keywords. There are many free tools that can help you to do keyword research. Some of them are SEObook Keyword Suggestion tool, Google Adwords Keyword Tool.

2. Try to make keyword density according to search engines rules so that it can help the search engine to determine that your page is indeed related & relevant to the keyword that you are targeting. Search Engine generally follows a webpage which have keyword density approx 4 to 5 % and it is good. I personally like to use synonyms instead of having a high keyword density.

Link Optimization:
It is important to optimize your internal & external outbound links for search engines as well as to give your visitors a better navigation.

While doing SEO you should try to use good Anchor Text when you are linking to other people. You should include the appropriate keyword in the anchor text which gives the outbound link a ‘proper meaning’ and value because if it is not related to webpage then user can go out quickly from your page and it will be harmful for your site.

HTML Tags:
In on page optimization it is necessary for you to highlight certain parts and keywords of your website that you want your readers to look at. There are several html tags which allow you to do it. There are many header tags as h1, h2, h3, Bold [strong], Italic etc. The text inside your header tags h1 is given very high importance by the search engine. Basically h1 tag is used to define the page titles or the important sections of your website. Header 2 and 3 can be used for Page/Post titles or important sections of your pages. Separating your content with headers is a good for the webpage as well as website. You can bold and italic high importance keywords. Sometimes it’s good to bold your keywords where appropriate.
